138 North Avenue / Mads Larson House
Hartland’s blacksmith, Mads Larson, was born in Denmark in 1847 and came to Hartland in
1868 when he was 21 years old. He worked in another blacksmith’s shop until 1873, when he opened his own shop on the lot to the south of him
home. His services included horse shoeing, repair work, plow sharpening and
general smith work. A brick dated 1878 can be found in the basement of the
building.
