136 Hill Street / Harold Van Buren Home

This home was originally owned by Harold Van Buren, nephew of Sarabelle Van Buren and Hartlan’s postermaster from 1936 to 1974. Van Buren also operated a grocery and meat business in Hartland for many years.

In the mid-1800’s, the lot housed a livery barn and was used as a stagecoach stop. Horses were changed and the stagecoach would continue its route up Hill Street. Built in 1934, the one-and-one half story gabled stucco home is square in plan with a concrete foundation. It features a gabled wood portico sheltering the round-arched main entrace. On the east facade, there is a wide brick chimney with stone trim and a small leaded glass window. The house retains excellent exterior and interior architectural integrity.
