Hartland Lumber and Fuel Company
In 1874, Enos Salsich and his son, Hamilton, started the H.E. Salsich Lumber
Company on land on the southwest corner of Cottonwood and Park Avenues
purchased from the Pawling family. By 1898, it housed a complete line of
cement, brick and lumber and was considered to be one of the largest lumber
yards in Waukesha County. The lumber company continued to expand and in 1917
became the Hartland Fuel and Lumber Company.
On February 23, 1959, a raging fire destroyed three of the Hartland Fuel and
Lumber Company buildings. The fire, which broke out in the lumber yard office
and hardware store, caused an estimaged $75,000 damage before it was brought
under control by three fire departments.
