The Hartland Creamery

The Hartland Creamery was established in 1894 to give local farmers a convenient place to sell their milk. It was processing 3,000 pounds of milk a day by the end of 1895. In 1907, the creamery was the only manufacturing concern in Hartland. A new building was constructed in 1911. Built of concrete blocks, the basement was used for the production of cheese, while butter and ice cream were produced on the first floor.

The creamery was sold in 1916 to John Haerle who put an addition on the building in 1921. He also intalled a new whistle in 1925 that was accepted as the “Village Clock.” It blew at 8:00 a.m., noon, 1:00pm and 5:00pm. The company was eventually sold to the Carnation Company.
