128 Cottonwood / Old Hartland Fire Department Building

On July 2, 1893, a very serious fire in the Village of Hartland led the Village Board to earnestly review their fire fighting plans. The first meeting of the Hartland Fire Department was held in December 1893, and the first firehouse was built shorty after. In July 1906, a massive fire which caused an estimated $20,000 in damage burnt most of the buildings at the north end of Cottonwood Avenue, including the firehouse.  Work began on a new firehouse in 1909, and ironically, it also was destroyed by fire in 1923. In 1924, this two-story structure was completed. It was also used as a Village Hall, with the Village Board meeting on the second floor. A jail was located in the basement. The fire department moved into their current facility on Lawn Street in 1964 and placed this building up for sale.
