The Community Memorial Building
In 1903, a petition was circulated to businessmen and concerned citizens
regarding the building of an official Village Hall. Construction did not begin
until 1921, and it proceeded very sporadically, primarily because of the lack
of money. Work was done at the least expense and with as much volunteer labor
as possible. The plans were revised many times to bring the cost down.
Finally, in 1929, the American Legion made a commitment to complete the
building. The Community Memorial Building, complete with kitchen and
auditorium, finally opened in November, 1930. Owned by the “Hartland Community”, an incorporated organization dedicated to promoting local welfare, the
Community Memorial Building housed the library, Legion Hall the Hartland Band
and the Village offices. Ownership passed to the Village in 1943.
The second floor was condemned in 1969, but the first floor continued to house
Village offices until 1980, when a new municipal building was completed. The
building was razed at that time.
If you have any historic pictures (preferably pre-WWII) that you would like to
share with the Hartland Historical Society,
