Dr. Edwin Bengamin House

As one of the oldest home remaining inHartland, this brick structure is believed to have been built in 1854 to 1859. Dr. Benjamin wsa also Hartland’s postmater from 1853 to 1855. At that time, the post office was housed in the west end of the home.

The plan of the structure consists of a central block, dominated by three very largemulti-paned sash windows, flanked on either side by a one-story rectangular brick addition. The main block has a gabled roof and is trimmed with a simple wooden barge board. In 1946, when the house changed ownership, the grass had not been cut in 20 years and the house had no indoor plumbing. To fix a break in the foundation, the brick wall in the front of the main block had to be dismanteled. The bricks had been painted a deep red, and each needed to be hand sanded before the front wall was reassembled.
