424 E. Capitol / Charles Wittenberg

Charles Wittenberg, Hartland born and raised, operated a livery stable in Hartland from approximately 1900-1920. Converting over to a road construction firm in the village, his trucking business plowed snow for Waukesha County and also was instrumental in building Blue Mound Road into Milwaukee. Wittenberg, actively involved in other community enterprises, served on the board of the State Bank of Harland and the White Elm Nursery and in his earlier years, raised horses to be raced at Hartland Race Park. He also was one of the developers of Wisconsin Memorial Park.

Built in 1926 in Spanish Colonial Revival Style, the square two-story house has a concrete foundation, a stone-veneered first story, and a stucco upper story. Red tile covers the hipped roof. A wide orange brick chimney with stone quoins pierces the red tile eave of the one-story section on the home. Northwest of the house is a detached matching garage with a hipped red tile roof. A small water tower remains in the rear of the property.
