407 Capitol / Hamilton Salsich House
Hamilton Salsich, owner of one of the largest lumber companies in Waukesha
County as well as a successful lumber company in northern Wisconsin, built this
home around 1897 with lumber from his mills. In 1949, the house was converted
into the Pinecrest Convalescent Home with a capacity of eight patients. It was
converted back to a single residence and at one time was the home of Dr.
Richard Chambers, founder of the Hartland Clinic.
The tow-and-one-half story frame Queen Anne house has a stone foundation and a
multi-gabled roof. Clapboard appears on the lower story of the house, with
shingles on the upper stories and gable ends. On the interior, elaborate late
19th century details prevail. An open newel staircase of light wood dominates
the entry hall. Other features include a fireplace of Chinese red brick,
egg-and-dart ceiling molding and raised plaster ceiling ornamentation in many
of the rooms.
If you have any historic pictures (preferably pre-WWII) that you would like to
share with the Hartland Historical Society,
