338 E. Capitol Drive, Dr. Henry Nixon House
Built over a three year preiod from 1983 to 1895, this home was built for Dr.
Henry Nixon, a prominent Hartland physician who began his medical practice in
Hartland in 1887. His first office was across the street in the Burr Oak
Tavern. This design for “The Country Doctor’s Home” was an architectural award at the 1890 Chicago World’s Fair. The irregular silhouette features a three-story shingled turret with a
conical roof on the southwest corner, a fieldstone chimney and a small leaded
glass rounded-arched window on the west facade.
A geneological survey conducted by the State of Wiconsin in 1950 discovered that
the foundation of the house was built in the traditional Welsh manner. The
stones for the foundation were laid first, with a layer of mortar applied
later. The Nixon home is one of only three such buildings remaining in the
state.
In addition to providing Hartland with excellent medical care, Henry and
Antoinette Nixon donated 12 acres of land to be developed as a recreational
park. Nixon Memorial Park on East Park Avenue opened in 1931.
If you have any historic pictures (preferably pre-WWII) that you would like to
share with the Hartland Historical Society,
