315-317 E. Capitol Drive / Burr Oak Tavern
In 1848, the Watertown Plank Road was completed in Hartland, and Patrick Kelly
built the Burr Oak Tavern to provide a place of rest and refreshment for its
travelers. Around the turn of the century, the building was moved back 60 feet; one half of
the structure was set on a new foundation.
Over the years, the building served a variety of function, perhaps the most
significant as an emergency hospital for Dr. Henry G. B. Nixon. Dr. Nixon ran
the hospital from 1937 until his death in 1939, and it was equipped with a
waiting room, office, operating room and an x-ray room.
The Burr-Oak Tavern is a fine high-style example of a Greek Revival commercial residence and retains excellent exterior integrity. The symmetrical main facade features multi-paned sash and frieze windows and a two story Doric portico sheltering the main entrance.
If you have any historic pictures (preferably pre-WWII) that you would like to
share with the Hartland Historical Society,
please let us know by emailing us at:hartlandhistory@gmail.com.
