127-129-131 Capitol Drive / The Jackson Building

The foundation for this two-story business block was laid in 1913, and on July 1, 1914, Schwartz’s Big Store sponsored a free dance to the public to celebrate its opening. Ten years later, the building was sold the Thompson Cooperative, which occupied it until its closing in 1927.  in 1929, the store was purchased by Herbert and Rosalia Jackson and became Jackson’s Department Store. During its heyday in the 1960-1970’s, the department store occupied all three floors and was complete with pneumatic tubing or remitting cash to the registers upstairs. The retail store remained in the Jackson family until it closed on December 22, 1984.
