112 E. Capitol Drive / Bank of Hartland

The first bank of Hartland was established in 1894, and through the first few years could be found in an assortment of locations. This was teh bank’s first permanent location, with the original buliding constructed in 1906.  The building is the dole example of Georgian Revival commercial architecture in Hartland. The first addition was attached to the rear of the building in 1916. Another was built to the west side in 1926, which almost doubled the size of the bank.

The bank was closed by the State Banking Commission in 1938 for reasons that were not disclosed. An application was soon filed for a new bank. Later that year the bank reopened naming David Kerr president.  It remained in the Kerr family until December 1986, when grandson Dave Kerr sold the bank to the Valley Bank Corporation. In June of 1994, Valley Bank merged with M & I Bank.
